Most Common Crimes During the Holiday Season

It’s not uncommon for crime to spike during the holiday season. Here are four of the most common types of crimes that occur around the holidays and some advice for what to do if you are arrested for any of them.

  1. Shoplifting and pickpocketing. As shoppers descend on stores for sales and holiday gifts, these two theft crimes often spike.
  2. Burglary of vehicles often spikes for similar reasons as shoplifting and pickpocketing. People often leave valuables in their vehicles while holiday shopping, making them attractive targets.
  3. Porch pirates. In the age of Amazon and online shopping, packages left on doorsteps can easily be swiped.
  4. Driving while intoxicated. The time period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is the time period with the highest number of drunk or otherwise intoxicated drivers on the road. Whether these drivers are coming home from a work party or simply hit the eggnog too hard at home, police are on the lookout for DWIs during the holiday season.
